Curious if y’all have the same deep and meaningful relationship with music that I do. When a piece of music moves me, I get goosebumps, I see visuals in my mind, I feel validated and alive. I have songs that capture different moods and enrich my experience with them. My taste is eclectic and sometimes my strong reaction takes me by surprise at random moments.
Some random bands or songs that I can’t get enough of:
Radiohead and anything Thom Yorke does on his own
Pink Floyd
Chopin nocturnes
Debussy piano works
Khruangbin
Tame Impala
Fleetwood Mac (Songbird reliably brings tears to my eyes)
Bjork
Mitski
Mozart piano concerto No 20, first movement
As a young person in the 90’s/00’s I loved house music and could dance and dance for hours, just feeling it in every cell in my body. I would feel so uplifted and refreshed after a session!
What is your relationship to music? What are your favorites?
My taste in music depends on the day. I have everything from Frank Sinatra to New Kids on the Block. I love pop, R&B, country, oldies, and a little bit of rap.
I tend to get stuck on one song that I love and listen to it over and over again.
I like how music can put you in a different mood so quickly. And how it can take you back to a different time.
For me, music makes noxious chores easier to tolerate. I am not “domesticated“…I dislike floor mopping, toilet cleaning, doing dishes, etc. Playing some fun ,upbeat music makes it easier for me to do those tasks.
When I need to drive long distances ( especially out here in the vast expanses of Arizona desert) I like to play energetic music to keep me alert while I drive.
Would love to recommend "Weightless" by Marconi Union. Very relaxing; infact it's among the top relaxing music in the World. Basically, just a combination of beats, rhythms and tunes but it does its work 😊
I feel this so deeply! I couldn't live without music. Listening to music is such an emotional experience for me. It can greatly effect my mood. I like to sit in my car after a long day and just turn up the music and get lost in it. It sooths my soul. I have gone to a lot of concerts it has been some of the best experiences of my life. To have music so loud you can feel it and truly just living in the moment and not thinking about anything else but the music. It is truly the only way to shut my brain off sometimes. I have a hard time talking to people about music when they don't understand my connection to it. I am glad I am not alone in that feeling!
I remember crying to Robert Miles in the middle of a busy club back in the 90’s! I’m sure the clubbers found that a bit confusing. 🤣
I got you. I love melodies with a lot of echoes and love to look into the deep of the sky when I listen to it. My heart beats goes up and my eyes get wet. When a melody touch me deep I can't hold my tears. I organize the music i like by moods and feelings
I love all classic rock ballads, new age (enya), dream trance (Robert miles/Roger Sanchez), deep space ambient (carbon based lifeforms/lowly), handdrum music (yatao), electronic remixes (estrange fruits), etc.
so i am a radiohead-head from day one & often describe thom yorke as my muse, so much of his music fills my art gallery hallways i couldn't describe how important it has been to have his music express things i never could..
i also love midlake, nick drake, the decemberists, the late elliott smith.. <3
Ah yes Enya! I remember putting in Shepherd Moons on my walkman and using that to lull myself to sleep almost every night freshman year of college.
Absolutely
I’m a fan of Ennya, too. Also music in that genre; Gandalf, Coyote Oldman, Cusco, and Karen Marie Garret.
I love music with great beats and energy. I just pluck in my earbuds and I'm good to go. Gives me inspiration and this burst of energy I . But in my more morose state, I love calming, relaxing music. Enya and Yanni are my favorite for that
So nice to be here with all of you! I find that many other people just don’t experience music the way I do, but clearly, my fellow tribe members do. 😀
I went on a first date once and asked what music he was in to. He couldn’t think of anything! Not a song, not a band, not a genre. My mind could not compute…and so that was also our last date. 🤣
Today, Mitski is giving me life. Who knows what it will be tomorrow?
It depends on my mood, but I like hard rock, glam metal, nu metal, big band, jazz, classical, alternative, and some 80’s pop. Lately, I’m listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Falling in Reverse.
I definitely agree that INFJ’s have eclectic tastes in music. l love how music can resonate thru your soul, that you can feel the passion and energy of how each lyric is sung and each chord is played. My choice in music varies depending on my mood. I enjoy all music, but my favorite genre of music is rock and blues. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of 80’s -90’s alternative like Depeche Mode and Portishead😀. My favorite bands are The Beatles, The Doors, Santana, The Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Dave Matthews Band, Cream, Pink Floyd, Ravi Shankar, and it goes on and on. I also love Fiona Apple, her second album “When the pawn……” is so passionate that it helped me thru certain tribulations of my love life. Just please don’t ask what my favorite song is!🤣
Oh I love salsa too!! Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I understand what you mean. Music can reach into your mind and soul. It can stir the imagination. In your minds eye you can visualize scenes that it evokes. It can energize…and it can soothe & relax.(I like to say, it gives me “happy feet”). I think that eclectic musical taste is an INFJ trait. We INFS’s are complex, multi faceted people…with multi faceted musical appreciation.
Over the years, various friends and loved ones have introduced me to Russian folk music, American folk music and Blugrass, all of which I love. Local alternative radio introduced me to many types of Latin American music…I love Cuban salsa the best. But the most hauntingly beautiful music I have encountered is Mexican traditional music. (Huapango, etc).
And, as a huge folk music geek…I love Irish and Celtic music…and even Scottish bagpipe&drum music. Then, there is classical: Anything by Antonio Vivaldi, the Strauss’s, and Johann Sebastian Bach; also Ludwig van Beethoven.
My favorite “modern” music: Heart, Journey, the Eagles, etc.
